Gone are the days when weddings were exclusive events, today they have become larger than life. And while all that sounds very nice on paper and looks even better in pictures, it becomes a massive expensive as well. From the wedding dress to the arrangement, décor and not to forget the wedding cake – everything has become so expensive and commercial. However, the most beautiful weddings are the smaller ones that are personally planned by those who are getting married. And this is precisely why this new trend of intimate weddings and personally baked wedding sponge cakes has become so popular suddenly.

By hosting an intimate wedding, not only do you save on a lot of capital but you also actually experience your wedding as well. The wedding sponge cakes that are baked by a family member are always more special than those seven tier cakes that can be bought by spending cash because there is something so unique and heartening about someone investing time to bake a cake for you.  Moreover, considering the fact that wedding sponge cakes can cost up to thousands of dollars, it is rather wise to get a family member to bake one especially if they are into baking.
Wedding sponge cakes can be baked in any size, depending on the size of your oven and in just about any flavor. Though it is advised to opt for chocolate or vanilla flavor since most guests will appreciate and enjoy it. Sometimes people use a layer of fruit in wedding sponge cakes to make them taste even better. A sponge cake tastes best when it is layered with a thick layer of frosting and cream cheese frosting is absolutely perfect for vanilla, red velvet and carrot cakes. However, if you have baked a chocolate wedding sponge cake, then it is best to opt for a chocolate fudge frosting.
Contrary to popular belief, you can even bake tiered cakes on your own. You just need to have patience and time for that. Just bake separate cakes, frost them with frosting or icing and put them on top of each other. Let them refrigerate for a while so they settle perfectly. However, if it is summer months that you are struggling in, it is advised to keep the cake as simple as possible because frosting can become quite a mess in the summer.
Local bakeshops have cake toppings and decoration items that can be used to decorate and beautify the cake. Wedding cake toppers are readily available online as well and therefore finding them is not a problem at all.

If you want a themed or a customized cake, it is advised to use fondant or marzipan. Marzipan can easily be bought from local cake shops as well and food color can be added in it to give the cake precisely the color you want. However, make sure to practice using fondant or marzipan a few times before you use it on a wedding cake because dealing with it can be tricky and challenging at times.
